Soooooo irritating seeing people who have no educational background in this act like they know more than the experts. It's like your education is reading your friends memes on FB and you think you know more about this than people who have dedicated their lives to this and got PhD's in it. I wonder if those people needed a heart surgery, saw 100 surgeons and 97 said hey if you don't have this surgery you will die, they read a FB meme saying its fake news with no source and they are like, nah you Drs are crazy, I'll be fine. I am not an idiot, nor am I genius but in no way do I think I know more that people who dedicate their lives to different areas. How egotistical do you got to be to think that?

Another example that I find sad and kind of funny is this "Liberate" states movement. All these websites pop up saying liberate XYZ state. All of them registered same day, all on same registrar, all same FB pages (FB took them down), all same text on pages, but the group forgot to cocer the whois on one page and it was revealed it was a comapny with ties to Betsy Devos, you know the billionaire who never even been on a PTA board who is running our education system (dont get me started, horrible cabinet member). So basically you got large business owners who want workers to go back to work and potentially kill themselves in the process so the business owner could make more money and these people jump at it as soon as the President start promoting it. It's like do you guys want to go back to work that badly? Shit collect your unemployment and enjoy your little vacation. Then GA decides to "liberate" itself and Trump does a 180 and essentially says no I didn't mean it, I don't agree with it. So WTF did he want, people to go kill themselves at work and "liberate themselves" or not?

Amen!

Man, I have actually met people who would rather take medical advice from facebook than their Dr.s for non-covid 19 related stuff. Coincidence, they were also anti-vaxxers.

Seriously Facebook is responsible for so much hatred in the world. Zuckerburg has to be one of the worlds most sick b**tards. I think we need to re-evacuate the definition of “free speech” in the digital era. Right now, free speech seems to mean free-for-all on bringing down democracy.

As you say you are in Las Vegas, perhaps that is a question you should be posing to your mayor.

Since we're on the subject; as site manager, do you know if it's possible to apply to the Russian farms for better quality trolls? I know we represent a very small niche of perverts, but ones we've been assigned are becoming so tiresome.
Its important to listen to everyone though. I was reading a book (Forgot title) but it talked about freedom of speech and how important it is for even crazy people (flat earthers) for example to have free speech because if you censor one person, and only allow certain people to speak, then who decides who speaks and who doesnt. Basically its up to us as citizens to decide what to listen to and not but cant tell certain people they cant speak. Just need to do a better job with the youth to have them fact check things they read online instead of believing everything they read on FB, lol.

Every new communication technology comes with upheaval. The printing press led to the Reformation and the Renaissance. The Nazis were masters at manipulating information through the impact of radio and newsreels. Sorry to say, history would seem to suggest the inevitable. But the only cure for bad speech is more speech. Let the flat-earthers shout about their fear of approaching the edge of the world, put to the tests of proof and time, facts will eventually drown them out.
I guess you’re right. Thinking about social media in relation to the printing press makes a lot of sense. I guess we just have to face up to the new challenges that come with the technology. When the Nazis dropped propaganda leaflets on the countries they invaded, the people knew where they came from. (US did the same in Iraq, for better or worse depending on your perspective.) Now we have manipulative propaganda coming to us disguised as facts, seemingly from sources that many of us trust. It’s the same game but the layers of deception are often harder to unravel for many people.

There is also the problem of blind faith. Flat earthers fall into this category. Imho, I cannot see how humanity can evolve to be the best version of itself all the time people are willing to debate such obvious nonsense.

I mean, of course the world is flat! 8) How else would you explain the fact we have day and night, and seasons, and the earth’s curved shadow on the f*cking moon! AGGGGHHHHH!!!

Sad that a thread which originated with good intentions in times of uncertainty turned into a bunch of political BS, including accusations of racism, numerous posts removed, at least one membership possibly deleted.

I honestly hope that we all stay safe and healthy, and civil.

My wife goes back to working in her office Monday after a month of working from home. Although my own work schedule hasn't altered in any way (other than much lighter traffic volume and increased overtime hours and pay), I have felt a considerable comfort knowing she was safely working in her pajamas in the safety of our home.
I worry about her welfare, and also for so many others who are worried for their own loved ones.

I ended up finally getting Covid at home tests from someone in my social circle who is mfg them and they give you results in like 10 minutes. I haven't taken one yet nor will I unless I absolutely need to. I did get one for my ex gf who thinks she may have it so going to bring it over to her tomorrow (leave at her doorstep) so she will know.

Right now they are even hard for me to get but going to get a bunch next month and go see my family. My biggest fear was seeing my parents and me infecting them so now with the tests, I can go up, test myself hour before I get to their house (23 hr drive) and know I am not jeopardizing their health in the process. Its a big relief for sure as I've been really down knowing I may not be able to go see them due to pre-existing condition my dad has. Hopefully in the next month or two they will be readily available for everyone as it will be a big step in returning to normal day to day life.

What is everyones prediction on the new states opening up, will it be fine or will it be another hot spot like NYC?

I've been outspoken, but I'll give it a whirl and try to stay on point. I did a bad job explaining my point previously. What I am about to postulate relays directly to Kensrs' last question.

I believe that the NYC cases, especially NYC deaths, have been overstated since the beginning for political reasons. Trump and Cuomo have sparred many times over many things leading up to this unfortunate experience. SALT being a big one. No other city or region wanted to bear the brunt of COVID like NYC 'experienced', leading to draconian, and frankly, unconstitutional measures being taken.

But we as Americans saw the greater good. No one wants to visit an elderly relative and pass on something that could be fatal to them. Everyone wanted to let this thing die down some to slow the spread and see what the actual mortality/ infection rates are. We all bought in and figured it was a nuisance but one worth undertaking. And it was.

Confirmed cases around the USA will continue to increase everywhere as more testing is done. I believe confirmed deaths have largely plateaued.

This will bring the mortality rate which is: covid confirmed #/ covid deaths # down to well under 1%. Most healthy people with minimal underlying preconditions will survive the virus like most other viruses. A flu can knock a healthy person out for a week, and lead to pneumonia and worse. Any virus can be deadly.

According to the CDC the swine flu of 2009-2010 infected 60,000,000 Americans, 1 in 5! and killed over 20,000. Nothing was stopped, no freedoms infringed upon.

The common flu is highly contagious, kills 50-100k Americans a year, nothing is stopped.

Some safeguards around medically fragile people and the elderly will probably have to remain in place. But it is asinine to continue to hold the entire USA 'on pause' because they fear being the next New York, when NYC has been fudging the numbers since the first week of April.

How are the other cities in NY State faring? How are other major regional cities faring? It's a nuisance, but one very manageable.

Confirmed cases will go up for months. Better testing allows that.
As a result, COVID mortality rate will drop

The damage done financially, through limited health services and other areas will not be calculable do to the overreaction to baked numbers in NYC.

The reason why the brakes were pumped on society at large is due to the highly infectious nature of COVID vs the H1N1. The R0 for H1N1 is 1.6 (1 sick person is likely to infect 1.6 people) vs COVID which was originally believed i think to be 2.3 but was revised to 5.6! If social distancing requirements hadn't been in place, I'm sure we would have eclipsed the H1N1 rate by now.

I've got family in the hospitals working in NYC, I don't believe they are as "baked" as some would believe. And the guiding line from epidemiologist was always "If we do this right, it will look like we over reacted"

I believe that the NYC cases, especially NYC deaths, have been overstated since the beginning for political reasons.
So what about the ones in Hubei, Lombardia, Madrid?

The problem is the right wing media is now pushing the narrative that the numbers are baked. They are, but likely UNDERESTIMATED not over. The sad thing is there are many people that will not believe this until it shows up in their backyard. When it does, it won't be pretty.

Hubei has been understated for political reasons. The Chinese have kept it at the same exact level since mid-February FFS. So do you really believe the Chinese discovered the miracle cure in mid-February?

They likely have the same numbers as the USA if not more.

The Chinese banned travel from Hubei only to the rest of China and used draconian methods like welding their homes and apartments' front doors and windows shut for 2-3 months. The Chinese government however allowed unlimited international travel from Hubei province to the rest of the world. Around 2-3 million Hubei Chinese left their province to inadvertently spread the virus around the world during December and January. Northern Italy's high-end fashion and textile manufacturing sector predominantly employs Chinese people for labor. So all those fancy bags and clothes could be argued to be "Made in China/Made by Chinese people" but they import the Chinese workers to Italy so they can claim that they are "Made in Italy". Sadly that is how the coronavirus spread and hit northern Italy so badly.

And while downplaying this virus by the "right wing media" is bad the flip side of overhyping the virus and trying to scare people by claiming millions will die even if we do a lockdown by the leftist media is just as bad too.

Look how bad the meat and vegetables situation is, as an example of "the cure could be even worse than the disease". They are now ordering farmers to destroy their fresh produce and meat because their customers which are schools and restaurants don't need that food anymore due to the lockdown. There is no food problem if we get our heads out of our asses and start just sending that wasted food to the people and grocery stores. It is a political and supply chain clusterfuck. If we starve to death blame our stupid system dating from the FDR New Deal era that actually pays farmers to kill livestock and burn and throw away perfectly good vegetables and fruit. The cool thing is that farmers like the ones in Idaho are just dumping their fresh potatoes on their property rather than destroy them like how they are ordered to and advertising to everybody to come and pick up free potatoes.
