Natalie Portman will be the new Thor in "Thor: Love and Thunder"

Post by fastmandan88 » 23 Jul 2019, 07:19

Good idea or bad?

We're getting a female James Bond also after Daniel Craig's final Bond film. This is after the newest Doctor Who is now a woman.

It was in the comics a year or two ago, Jane Foster took up Thor's mantle and Mjolnir and become the new Thor for some time. Pity they didn't make it permanent.

Sure. But it's just funny because Jane Foster (NOT Natalie Portman, who I love a lot as an actress, btw. She's one of my favorite actresses. And I actually like Jane.) is hated by 90% of MCU fans. Now that she is going to be "OMG Female Thor" these 90%ers will delete all the anti-Jane Foster comments and posts they ever wrote the past 9 years and ret-con how Jane was such an amazing character in Thor 1 and 2.

The aspect of the story that I loved was how Jane was undergoing chemotherapy at the time, so whenever she picked up the hammer to become Thor, the chemo would be purged from her system and her cancer could get worse. This *really* made her act of becoming Thor heroic because she was literally sacrificing her life for other people. Since then I think she became one of the Valkyries.

Movie-wise, Jane was a pretty weak character in the first two movies and I don't think Natalie fully embraced being a part of the MCU like other actors have. But if she's all in for the new movie and Tai W. (I keep mispelling his name) writes her well, I think it'd be very easy to win the fans over.

Once the iconoclasts in Hollywood try this several times and fail at the box office, they can blame it on sexist America.
They can always say, well we tried but people weren't ready, then go back to what works.

No -- Jane is bald at one point, but Thor maintains long, golden locks. Jane eventually did die from her cancer, but then was resurrected -- because comics.

This article has a basic rundown -- I'm not sure whether the movie will take the cancer angle.

So there is more than a 1% chance Portman will shave her head for this movie???? Count me in.

The original story arc in CB didn't get a worm welcome by fans, I don't see any actual reason to make it other then forced "diversity". I would prefer to see a Jessica Drew or Jennifer Walters movie tbh, the actual heroines that the fans like.

Eh it was a fine run. And it isn't "forced diversity" it is to shake up the status quo. Taika destroying Mjolnir in Ragnarok. Electric Superman. Dick Grayson as Batman. Things need a change up every so often or they get stale.

Yeah, so why not fan favouirite Beta Ray Bill since we already got stormbreaker in MCU? Azrael as Batman! Change needs to have a reason, a change just for a sake of change is just GoT season 8.

Because Jane is an established MCU character and her time as Thor was recent, like as of last month. I do agree they wasted Bane in Nolan's run without us getting Az-Bats. They're doing a DC Elseworlds book later this year of if Bruce never reclaimed the mantle. You may want to check it out.

A graphic artist made this. Natalie Portman with shaved side. Unofficial art.

They didn't, because the whole series in the comics was a total financial desaster.

Why make it a movie then.

Because most people who watch these superhero movies are casual movie-goers or casual fans at best, who don't read the comics the movies are based on. They don't make these movies for the hardcore comic book purists. They make them for the general audience.

Well, she has a retro Dorothy Hamill wedge cut and wings in her new astronaut movie. Looks rather wiggy though, I can't see this style catching on, but hey you never know?
